The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
finished 6/13/09 ....... rating 8
This is a long and fairly difficult and mostly plotless book. It's good primarily because of the characterization of the protagonist, Isabel Archer. And it's interesting because James was trying so hard to make it real - like someone was describing something which is historical. It strikes me as though he's trying to report gossip. There is a first person narrator who is not James because the narrator knows the characters as real people in his world.
